Description
Fox Fur and Cone Nebulae – NGC 2264
24×36 Foam Board Prints with 5×8 Foam Board Placard
NGC 2264, a young star cluster and nebula nestled in the constellation Monoceros (the Unicorn), lies approximately 2,700 light-years from Earth. By comparison, Proxima Centauri, our nearest stellar neighbor beyond the sun, is about 4.24 light-years away. Still within the bounds of our Milky Way Galaxy, which spans an impressive 105,700 light-years in diameter, NGC 2264 stands out for its vibrant structures and youthful vibrancy, with the sun being a mere 8 light minutes distant from us.
The cluster is home to hundreds of stars, many in their infancy, cradled within protoplanetary disks. These disks, rich with gas and dust, are believed to be the nurseries of future planets. At an estimated age of 3 million years, the cluster is relatively young on the cosmic timescale.
Dominating the view, a luminous green region often likened to a Christmas tree ornament gleams brightly, a testament to the dense collection of stars within this gas-rich area. Adjacent to this spectacle, the ‘Fox Fur Nebula’ unfurls in shades of red, resembling the facial features of a fox, complete with an eye and an extending snout, as the red gas trails away, mimicking the texture of fur.
A highlight within this cosmic tableau is the Cone Nebula, delineated in yellow and orange hues. Stretching about 7 light-years from its radiant tip to its base, this cone-shaped marvel adds to the diversity and beauty of NGC 2264’s landscape.
Remarkably, these celestial features were captured from the modest setting of a backyard in Spring Hill, TN, USA, reminding us that the wonders of the universe can be accessed from just about anywhere on our planet.
